Four of us headed Norfolk early morning with a few things in mind. I
personally wanted visit
Stubb Mill for the cranes anything else was a bonus. We arrived
Tichwell 9am a reserve Ive always had a soft spot for but its changed a lot from my last visit & for the better. The walk to the posh new hide got us Marsh Harrier & Barn Owl. Plenty of birds on the fresh water lagoon
Goldeneye Pochard Shoveler
Pintail &
Gadwall were the better ducks. Waders were all on a small spit a few Knot plenty of Ruff, Golden Plover, Black tailed
Godwit, Redshank and Lapwing. A small flock of
Dunlin & just 2 Grey plovers were mixed in. A single
Avocet seems to be wintering on the reserve. The Brackish marsh
didn't hold the
Shorelarks it did the day previous but Water Pipit, Linnets, Twite Skylarks & Water Pipit all offered good views. Other Birds to note dotted around were
Cettis Warbler , Water rail, Brent Goose & Snipe.
Cantaley was next stop as one of the lads needed Lesser White Fronted Goose my hopes were not to high as it can be a bugger. Around a 100 Bean Geese were there with nearly as many White Fronts it took an hour to get a couple of poor views of his neck & head popping out of a ditch. We had much better luck at
Stubb Mill 9 cranes were seen with 3 landing and offering
splendid low flybys.
I'm sure half of
Norfolks Marsh Harriers came into roost plus a
Ringtail, Kestrel, Sparrow Hawk & Barn owl. Other birds to note were Pink
Feet's Stonechat & Hooded Crow. You got to just love Norfolk
